Prototype Development
M.E.S.A Mk1: Real-Time Soil Intelligence for Smarter Land Management
Terra Preta is developing a solar-powered soil monitoring unit designed to help growers, gardeners, land stewards, and property managers better understand what is happening beneath the surface.
M.E.S.A Mk1 is currently in prototype development. Concept images shown are design visualizations and may change as testing continues.

Why M.E.S.A Mk1 Needs to Exist
Most land is managed with limited real-time information. People water, fertilize, treat, plant, and maintain landscapes without truly knowing what is happening inside the soil from day to day.
This often leads to wasted water, unnecessary inputs, poor plant performance, nutrient runoff, and reactive land management. M.E.S.A Mk1 is being developed to help shift land care from guesswork to observation.
This is not just a sensor project. It is part of Terra Preta's larger mission to support smarter land management, healthier soil systems, and more responsible use of water, nutrients, and other resources.
Product Overview
What Is M.E.S.A Mk1?
M.E.S.A Mk1 is Terra Preta's prototype concept for a self-powered soil intelligence unit. The device is designed to be placed directly into soil and collect live environmental data from the root zone.
Its mushroom-inspired form is intended to be rugged, weather-resistant, and visually aligned with the living systems it helps monitor. The current concept includes a solar-panel cap, sealed weatherproof housing, internal battery and computing components, wireless data transmission, and a soil probe array designed to capture key soil readings over time.
Solar Powered
Designed for autonomous field use with an integrated solar cap.
Wireless Data Transmission
Intended to send live soil data to a phone, tablet, or dashboard.
Weather-Resistant Housing
Built around the goal of outdoor durability and long-term field deployment.
Soil Probe System
Designed to monitor conditions from within the active soil/root zone.
Live Dashboard
Intended to display trends, readings, and changes over time.
Field-Ready Design
Created for gardens, farms, nurseries, landscapes, and land stewardship projects.
Soil Health Monitoring
Designed to Track the Conditions That Matter
M.E.S.A Mk1 is being developed to help users observe key soil conditions that influence plant health, water movement, nutrient availability, and biological activity.
pH Monitoring
Helps indicate soil acidity or alkalinity and how conditions may affect nutrient availability.
Electrical Conductivity / EC Monitoring
Helps observe soluble salts, fertilizer movement, and changes in soil solution activity.
Moisture Tracking
Supports better irrigation decisions by showing changing water conditions in the soil.
Soil Temperature
Helps users understand root-zone conditions that influence plant and microbial activity.
Nutrient Indicators / NPK Development
Intended to support better awareness of nutrient-related trends as calibration and testing continue.
Trend Data Over Time
Helps users see how soil responds to watering, rainfall, amendments, heat, plant growth, and management changes.
Some sensor capabilities are still being tested and calibrated. Final specifications may change as development continues.
One Soil Intelligence Unit. Multiple Environments.

Home Gardens
Help gardeners understand watering patterns, soil changes, and plant health conditions.
Farms & Orchards
Support data-informed irrigation, nutrient management, and field observation.
Greenhouses & Nurseries
Help monitor soil or growing media conditions in containers and production systems.
Commercial Landscapes
Support smarter maintenance decisions for high-value landscapes, parks, offices, and managed properties.
Pastures & Fields
Provide insight into changing land conditions across larger biological systems.
Resource Management
Better Data for More Mindful Resource Management
Water, fertilizer, soil amendments, labor, and land are all valuable resources. Without accurate information, these resources are often overused, misapplied, or wasted. M.E.S.A Mk1 is being developed to help people observe soil conditions before acting, making it easier to respond with precision instead of guesswork.
The long-term goal is to help reduce unnecessary inputs, improve timing, support healthier plants, and give land managers a clearer view of how soil is functioning.
